MMT APAC - the latest smash hit!
MMT APAC was the latest smash hit, sell out event in Clarions' global mobile money portfolio. Over 150 attendees joined us in Manila, from across the Asia Pacific region.
A big thank you to event Chairman John Owens, and also to host operators Smart Communications and Globe Telecom, who treated attendees to a wonderful post-event day of site visits to markets, shopping centers and rural banks, where attendees could spend e-money, after learning how mobile money programmes work. MMT APAC was the first dedicated event to take place in the Philippines - the recognised home of mobile money - and attendees from over 20 countries enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to learn from local pioneers. We look forward to returning to Manila in January 2011 to further highlight and explore key developments in the region.

Integrating airtime top-up with mobile money transfers to provide a unique VAS for prepaid customers
Singapore based TransferTo was founded in 2006 by Eric Barbier, the company's current CEO. It operates a global airtime remittance network interconnecting mobile operators' prepaid users. It allows foreign workers to recharge the prepaid mobile phone of their relatives back home via SMS.
This week I spoke to, Eric Barbier about how their business is taking the mobile money industry by storm and about the formation of new partnerships to increase distribution of the airtime service.
The MMT APAC Opportunity
The Asia Pacific region will see the biggest take up of mobile payments worldwide - reaching 3.8 percent of all mobile users by 2012. Furthermore, the World Bank estimates that $118.4bn of remittances flowed into East Asia and the Pacific in 2008. The Philippines offers one of the most accommodating regulatory environments for mobile money, with the Central Bank recognising the potential for MMT to facilitate low cost, low value, high frequency remittances which can have a positive impact on GDP.
